MI Navy Student’s climb halted by illness

Marine Institute navy student, Jean-Paul (J-P) Richard returned home last week after illness halted his attempt to summit Mount Aconcagua.

J-P was forced to stop his climb when he was diagnosed with high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). HACE is a severe form of and sometimes fatal altitude sickness. Immediate descent is a necessary life-saving measure so J-P had to return to base camp on Christmas Day to recover.

Evolution and Innovation: MI launches 2007-2008 Annual Review

The Marine Institute has officially launched Evolution and Innovation: Marine Institute Annual Review 2007-2008.

This year’s annual review has been published as an online brochure. The theme of Evolution and Innovation highlights the Marine Institute’s major accomplishments over the past year and underscores how MI is leading the way in developing the ocean technology sector here at home and around the world.

The stories included in this year’s review showcases the exceptional people that make the institute what it is and the outstanding facilities that have allowed us to build an exceptional reputation as an educational and research innovator. The report also touches on the institute’s collaborative culture that ensures we continue to grow and foster productive partnerships to achieve excellence in teaching, training and research. The report also contains an array of statistics on employees, fiscal information, enrolment and scholarships.

We invite you to learn how MI is working towards its goal of becoming the premier world’s ocean institute and how we are continuing to redefine ourselves as we address the needs of education, industrial training and applied research in the global oceans economy.

Marine Institute Career Fair Set for Feb. 11-12, 2009

Students looking for future employment will have an opportunity to network with employers from the marine transportation, ocean technology, aquaculture and food sectors thanks to an annual event at the Marine Institute.
 
More than 40 exhibitors and presenters are expected on the Marine Institute campus February 11-12 to participate in the seventh annual Marine Institute Career Fair.
 
The fair is open to all Marine Institute students and alumni who want connect with potential employers, seek out employment opportunities and discuss the latest industry developments in their field. The general public and high school students are also invited to learn more about the career opportunities available in this ever-increasing oceans sector.

Recycling helps more than the environment: MI donates over $2200 to Campus Food Bank

Recycling is a great way to help preserve the environment but staff, faculty and students of the Marine Institute have also found a way to help turn those old beverage containers into food for those in need.

Over $2200 was collected through the beverage container recycling program at the institute and donated to the MUN campus food bank. The cheque presentation was made at the institute on November 25 by Mike Wadden, Ever Green Recycling.
